  • This is a compilation of Narcissistic personality traits as described by Nancy McWilliams using the character Sherlock Holmes from the BBC television show Sherlock. Psychodynamic Narcissistic personality is very similar to the DSM diagnosis for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, but they should not be considered the same.

I'd say he's just emotionally traumatized cause of his past. I mean, he even completely erased the memory of his sister from his own mind palace. He isn't emotionally incapable, he just learns to control it better than others. In season 4, Sherlock looked slightly shocked when Eurus killed the three men and he looked almost terrified when Eurus said she would blow up Molly. Mycroft even said that he was a very emotional person before the incident with 'Redbeard' and it turned out that it was his best friend too. I think his trauma forced him to change many things to protect the people he loves. That's why he didn't have friends and his trauma caused him to erase all of his memories of emotions from his mind, so no one else got hurt

Having lived with a narcissistic personality for years, I would say that he does tick a lot of the boxes and I actually went through an online questionnaire for him which reminded me that at least he doesn't gaslight his friends or is violent towards them. And he exhibits the capacity to change when loved which a true narcissistic personality never does.

This is a good video, but I disagree with the way he is described. He isn’t narcissistic or vain or completely emotionally insensitive or unable to access his emotions. Sherlock comes from a family of geniuses (amongst his siblings at least). He was the middle child with an older brother, Mycroft, who claims to be smarter than Sherlock, and his younger sister, Euros, who is the smartest of the three. Sherlock was described as the more emotional and sensitive one of the siblings which is why his older brother, Mycroft, would always groom Sherlock to be more reliant on his intelligence than his emotions; he taught Sherlock that “caring is not an advantage”, so Sherlock did what he was told in order to become a more brilliant person: he learned to lock away his feelings, and even goes on to describe sentiment as “a chemical defect found in the losing side” and also when speaking of emotion (mainly love) he says, “...your heart, you should never let it rule your head.” Throughout the show, it is evident that Sherlock has some emotion, (even though his claim to being a “high-functioning sociopath” does create an emotional barrier in a way that he doesn’t fully understand typical human emotions). His love for his partner John Watson is very strong - whether it be romantic or platonic - and it shows in the way he does what he can to protect him and make him happy. He also cares for his landlady, Mrs Hudson, his care being most evident in S2:E1 “A Scandal in Belgravia” when he realizes that an American criminal had hurt Mrs Hudson to get to Sherlock (he drops the man out of a window). His emotion also shows in S4:E3 “The Final Problem” when Molly Hooper and Redbeard are used against him in a game of wits designed by his sister. His emotion is also evident in the way he comforts his sister after finding out what was done to her.
So if anything, Sherlock is a very emotional person, he just doesn’t fully understand how to feel because he locked his emotions away.

What is done to his sister? It's the exactly opposite, what she has done to other people, especially to her brother Sherlock. Killed his best friend from childhood, forced him, Mycroft and John into a perfid game where John almost died like Victor? Killed innocent people in cold blood? Planned this all together with Moriarty? And Sherlock forgave her for this evil things? He is really much too good for the world.
With the rest of your comment I absolutely agree. You are right.

I have did it some weeks ago.
And the phrase that he said that Molly mattererd the most, have only to do with the fact, that without her help Sherlock never could faked his own death.

      Zoe fang
When Molly is so important to Sherlock, why has he called John his family and not Molly?
When I call someone family then is this person most important for my life. And a best friend can be family too.
And why are Molly and Sherlock not together at the end?
      This is very simple.
Because it was never about Molly, it was only about the Holmes brothers and John. (Family matter).
When it would be all about her, why had he lost?
He would won, and all good then. But nothing about it. His reaction after the love confession would be different. Why was he not happy? There were no reasons to smash the coffin, that was meant for Molly. In the moment when Eurus said that he had lost, he smashed the coffin because he hurt Molly und felt sorry for it. He never would do it to her.
And what you have said about what Steven Moffat is not true. It was always about Sherlock and John.
I have watched very carefully this interview, and he don't said, that it was only Molly, who humanized Sherlock. She has her part, that's right and this shouldn't be forgotten, but she was is not alone.
Molly don't win because it is always Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson at the end.

I say of course he loves her, but it's only the love for a true and loyal friend. Love must be not always romantic.
And to be true, I can't imagine myself Sherlock in a romantic relationship with a woman in general.
In my opinion he is asexual and the work will always come for him at first place and his best friend John Watson with whom he solve crimes together.

I'm not going to watch the video, but you represent the literary character Sherlock Holmes of having the personality disorder of "Narcissism". This term is colloquially understood to mean- selfish, braggadocios, self absorbed in conquest of self gratification at any cost, by false charisma... so, by this understanding , Sherlock is absolutely NOT a narcissist. As defined by an official diagnosis, by doctor's, it's a mental condition, that people have a grandiose, overinflated ego, self worth, and/or importance. By this definition, Sherlock CAN'T be a narcissist... He (in the literary character) does not over sell himself... He is that smart, that intelligent, but also recognizes and admits, out loud to people, when he is being "stupid". Narcissists draw as many people into their world as possible, so they may be used or manipulated by the narcissist... Sherlock pushes most people away.
I hope you factored these into your video and eventual determination of Sherlock?!
Sherlock is not a narcissist, nor is he a high-functioning sociopath. Sherlock is a high-functioning moralist, driven by his moral code.

    • @christinabeyer9298
      @christinabeyer9298 6 лет назад

Yes, I agree with your opinion. Sherlock has high moral principles.
He will always punishment for offenders and justice for the victims of crimes.
Besides, no narcisst or sociopath would call himself the "idiot" like Sherlock during his wonderful wedding speech or towards his sister in Tfp.
But I think this has more to do with the fact, that the term "high functioning" also fits in the autistic spectrum.
Would make more sense for me than the whole sociopath or narcisst drivel.

    I disagree
I think these traits more so come from a mix of childhood trauma and most likely autism
Narcs don’t really care about anyone but themselves, but it’s been proven multiple times that Sherlock does care about people, specifically in the final episode of season 2, when Moriarty exploits this care for others to get him to “kill” himself
The trauma is the reason he shuts himself away from people and doesn’t really have any friends until John comes into the picture
With autism, a lot of social cues are missed, they don’t connect or register in the brain
I personally relate to this as I myself am autistic
Autism also causes sensory overload, which is what I always attributed to the drugs bust scene when he tells everyone to shut up
Other comments have explained it really well, but this is my stance on the matter
    I hope this makes sense

I think when he was a child he was normal with a hint of autism but not enough to be diagnosed as autist and if than very high functioning , I think without eurushe would have been a far nicer and considerate human being but still eccentric and sometimes rude.In the orginal books I think the sam diagnosis would fit but mabe lower levels of trauma .Just my opinion and guesses I am no professional in any way

That's not true, Sherlock is either narcissistic nor sociopathic because there were never any proofs of it in the whole series. You shouldn't believe all things which in this video are said.
By the way the remark of the so called "high functioning sociopath" was never meant serious, only sarcastic. That's officially stated. Noone can define himself about ASPD, even not Sherlock.
But there are people who compare sociopathy with autism, because the behavior towards people is similar. But it's not the same. Narcissts or sociopaths are mostly non-caring people, but Sherlock cares to much. He would always put the life of others above his own and in the worst case sacrifice himself to protect his friends. That's either narcissistic nor sociopathic.
Besides, no sociopath or narcisst would call himself an "idiot" like Sherlock did during his wedding speech or towards his sister.
Even not a ridiculous man or an obnoxious arsehole like he also did in Tsot, because narcissts or sociopaths are in their own eyes such "great" people.
      Just saying.

Sherlock definitely does care (he jumped off a roof for his friends).
I agree with John's comment in HOB re Sherlock having (extremely high functioning) Asphergers, though, which impacts everything about how he interacts with others - or doesn't interact. (My husband has Aspergers, I know what I'm talking about!) Growing up, he would've modeled himself after big brother Mycroft... And then, his childhood trauma w Eurus/Victor caused severe disassociation/would've had lasting effects on his subconscious/personality.

I think you should study the differences between a Cluster B Personalities to a Person on the Spectrum. You'll find him to have a lot more in common with an Aspie/Highfunctioning Austistic Person than with someone from the dark triad. Keywords: Affective and Cognitive Empathy.

Did not agree with this video at all. Brow furrowed and may of the descriptions didn't make sense and/or were leaps of judgement. Then read comments. Yep.
Though, he Does call Himself a high functioning sociopath. Key words: High Functioning. I'm no doctor but the show does label him this way.
Lastly, people are misjudged quite a bit. For instance, I have impossible standards for dating and have met not one person who fits my criteria for trust nor friendship (which I recently discovered was on purpose) so I will not settle. It may Appear as emotionally stunted but it is not.

The person who made this is nasty(yeah, this is the first words i would find)!whoever consider human traits as "Mental issues or whatever personality" is completely distorted and actually are have real mental issues!
These human have a uniqueness which is different from your conventional world and you can't recognize that!
If everybody is perfect have none of these traits you listed, they will be a fking robot and a plastic doll!
If you think these kinda of traits is bad, in the end, people who under that "perfection standard" will become a bunch of perfect idiots!
That is what means to be human! To have defaults and some part of these defaults composed such a genius personality!
If in your standard! All these human on Wikipedia, like Einstein, Shakespeare, or Mozart...etc are all psychopath!?!????
In my opinion, Sherlock has the best combination of personality, that why He is Sherlock and you are not!! Thanks for listing all of them out with your "distorted " words!

I'm not saying you're completely wrong, but just by those points alone, anyone and everyone could be a narcissist. I'm sure there is something we idealise ourselves as, we hold contempt for, we criticise others for and many of us judge ourselves and others a lot of the time. Many of us also feel superior in at least one way to a person who we consider an idiot, though we never make it quite as obviously known as Sherlock and the fact that many Americans prefer comedy where the protagonist which they project themselves onto as someone superior just proves this. Brits are similar, but not in terms of comedy protagonists. In other forms of media however, they do like to see themselves superior just like the Americans. In fact, all of Europe thought Americans to be "idiots" and the people with "smaller brains" at one point, out of a necessity to feel superior. It's really just humanity being narcissistic. Even those of us who never voice our opinions and are shy, introverted or too self conscious to speak up about it do have characteristics that could define us as narcissists... it's just less noticeable.
Sherlock isn't narcissistic, he just has narcissistic tendencies and a different perception of the world... though, arguably so do narcissists... so I guess that's not as much of a point.
If he wants to talk he'll say it, no point holding it in just to spare someone emotions when we all have to face the truth... including Sherlock, who does admit to being flawed - even if not directly - and does admit that he can be wrong, it's just that he's less often wrong about crime and mysteries than other detectives who did not put everything they had into being detectives. Sherlock lives for it to the point where it is his fantasy and the thing he does best... boasting about it is what we would do too if we were him... we just aren't, so it's easier for us to empathise with the criticised group, because we'd be that group in real life. But we constantly criticise others for their ''idiocy'' so.... it's not like we can talk.
That being said, this also works as a fine crack video and source of entertainment.
